Recipe for a spicy cookie with Advieh and chocolate chips.

Today we are hosting our second Iranian cooking class in Strasbourg. The main dish we have planned to prepare with the participants is Aash-Reshteh. We have already done an article about this dish 3 years ago. Aash-Reshteh is the perfect dish for December. It well suits the weather but most of all it is what most iranians eat during the equinox feast (Yalda) that will take place in about two weeks.

We also wanted to have a recipe for a dessert that will accompany our Aash-Reshteh. Something simple and fast that is well adapted to the season. So it was while doing research for our cooking class that I had the idea to make these Advieh cookies.

It’s is not a traditional recipe, but it contains the most essential spice blend of Iranian cuisine. I thought this recipe will give me the opportunity to talk about this iconic ingredient during our cookig class. Personally, when I miss the food of my country, but I’m too lazy to cook a typical dish. I add a little Advieh to any simple dish and I suddenly feel my spirit being carried to my mom’s kitchen.

Advieh is normally used for savory dishes, especially for flavoring rice. However I like to add it to some desserts too, and honestly it has always worked out for me (despite the fact that it has cumin in it). You will see, the composition of Advieh is kind of similar to the gingerbread spice mix (with some extra engredients). All the more reason to make these cookies during this month of December and slip some of them among your Christmas pastries.

Ingredients (for about 20 cookies) :
  • 480g Flour
  • 4Tbsp Advieh (you can find the composition here)
  • 1Tsp Cacao powder
  • 1Tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2Tsp Baking soda
  • 1/2Tsp Salt
  • 200g Chocolate chips
  • 220g Sugar
  • 250g Soft butter
  • 1Tsp Lemon zeste
  • 1 Egg
  • 200g Icing sugar (optional)
  • Rose petals (optional)

 

 

Mix all dry ingredients: flour, Advieh, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt and chocolate chips.

 

Whisk together the sugar, butter and lemon zest, to obtain a creamy mixture.

 

Add the egg and continue whisking for one minute (with a fork, or an elecric whisk on low speed).

 

Add the dry ingredients and knead to obtain a homogeneous mixture.

 

Shape the dough into small balls (about 20).

 

Place the balls in a the freezer for about 15 minutes.

 

Meanwhile, preheat your oven at 200 ° C.

 

Place the balls on a baking sheet, keeping at least 2 cm of space on each side (they will spread out).

 

Bake the cookies for 15 minutes.

 

If you want to make a glaze, just mix the icing sugar with 4 Tbsp of water.

 

Soak the surface of each biscuit in the icing sugar and let it dry. You can put rose petals to decorate before the frosting dries.
