Seasonal fruits and vegetables calendar

25 May 2016

calendrier-9You can not imagine how happy we are for the arrival of summer. Not only because of its weather, but because of all the new food it brings. There is no doubt, summer has the biggest variety of fruits and vegetables.

We are particularly eager for the arrival of Tomatoes! Contrary to what can be observed on the shelves of the super markets, the tomato season is quite short (June-September). So we will wait just a little bit more to be able to enjoy the naturally matured tomatoes and to make tasty dishes with them.

Like tomatoes, all fruits and vegetables are better consumed during their natural season. But it’s a bit hard to know what’s seasonal nowadays, when we can find all kinds of food in the shops all year around. With that idea in head, we decided to make our own fruits and vegetables calendar, which we will share with you today.

calendrier-4

Keep in mind that these are seasonal fruits and vegetables in Europe.

january

First month of the year, January is marked by the end of the holiday season, the good resolutions and hot chocolates … It is also a symbolic month because it marks a period of renewal (the new year) . On the downside one can not say that January is illustrated by a profusion of fresh products. In colder climates like ours, eating locally in winter can be rather complicated. But at Cosmic Tomatoes, we try nevertheless to suggest some loopholes to start the year: we do not have to eat cabbages, potatoes and onions until April! With good organization and a little creativity, it is possible to eat fresh fruits and vegetables (with lots of nutrients) and flavor throughout the winter.

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are: Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chicory, clementine, grapefruit, Jerusalem artichokes, kale, kiwi, leeks, lemon, orange, parsnips, pear, pomegranate, potato, spinach, tangerines, turnips, apples, kumquat …
